21 Feet of History

Redfield's Business History - Tracing the history of businesses in Redfield, South Dakota

Twenty-one feet of history derives its name from when Redfield was platted.  Main streets were established by allotting twenty-one feet for storefronts.  Some businesses would choose to purchase two lots, others butted up against neighboring buildings, while others had walkways that extended the length of the building thus reducing the width of their building.

For use in this presentation, we will refer to each site as twenty-one feet.  The information within this presentation was gathered from the Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps, which are housed in the Library of Congress, and issues of the Redfield Press.

Each site is depicted with an old photo, the history of the site and a photo of what is presently there as of 2024.
