Built in 1902, the Gillette Law Building was formally known as the Coleman Building. In 1918 the Art Coleman Family of Ashton, purchased it from A.B. Andersen Furniture Co. The Coleman family operated a furniture store and a funeral home on the east side of the building, and South Dakota's first JC Penny Department store occupied the west side.
