In the heart of South Dakota lies Redfield, where Alonna (Fast) Nordbye has recently assumed the Chamber/Tourism Director role. A proud Redfield High School graduate, Alonna brings a wealth of experience from the healthcare industry, having spent the last four years running a nursing home in rural northwest Iowa. Now, as the torchbearer for Redfield's economic and community development, Alonna is on a mission to breathe new life into the town she calls home.

Small-Town Business Advocate

As the Chamber/Tourism Director, Alonna's primary responsibility is to champion the local businesses that form the backbone of Spink County. Having grown up in Redfield, she understands the significance of mom-and-pop stores in fostering a vibrant community. Alonna's focus is clear – to ensure that small businesses witness a surge in revenue and to promote increased community engagement in Spink County. Her dedication to this cause is reflected in her outreach efforts, engaging with business owners and community members to understand their aspirations for the town. “Small-town businesses are the heart and soul of the community,” Alonna says.

Preserving Tradition, Exploring New Avenues

Redfield has long held the prestigious title of the "Pheasant Capital of the WorldⓇ," a tradition dating back to 1908. Alonna recognizes the economic boon of the annual pheasant hunting season, bringing a surge of activity to the town. However, she envisions expanding Redfield's appeal beyond this seasonal attraction. As the Tourism Director, she aims to identify and develop new niches, ensuring a steady influx of visitors throughout the year. Her strategic approach seeks to diversify the town's offerings, creating sustained economic growth beyond the hunting season.

Community-Centric Initiatives

Alonna's commitment to community involvement is evident in her proactive approach to seeking input from local businesses and residents. She solicits ideas for family-oriented activities and ensures the community remains engaged across all ages. These insights are channeled back to the chamber board, shaping the planning of events and initiatives that align with the community's desires. Alonna's collaborative efforts aim to strengthen the bond between businesses and residents, fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose in Redfield.

Resilience in the Face of Adversity

Alonna's leadership extends beyond her professional endeavors, as evidenced by her experience managing a healthcare facility during the challenging times brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite facing a significant impact on the facility census, she credits her dedicated staff and supportive board of directors for weathering the storm. This resilience and her passion for community development position Alonna as a driving force for positive change in Redfield.

A Personal Journey and Commitment to Redfield

Returning to Redfield was a professional and profoundly personal decision for Alonna. The sudden loss of her mother prompted her to revisit her roots and undertake the restoration of her childhood home. Alonna's connection to the community goes beyond her role, reflecting a genuine desire to contribute to the well-being and prosperity of Redfield. Alonna’s hobbies include camping, reading books, restoring old furniture, and spending time with family.

As Redfield's Chamber/Tourism Director, Alonna Nordbye emerges as a catalyst for change, weaving together tradition and innovation to create a dynamic and thriving community. Her journey embodies a commitment to preserving the town's heritage while embracing new opportunities for growth and prosperity.
